Apple made many modifications to improve the sound quality of the AirPods Pro 2. First, the company unveiled its new H2 chip, which improves sound processing at multiple stages of earbud operation. This is further enhanced by the addition of new “low distortion” audio drivers, a new amplifier, and other changes to give a wider sound stage than their predecessors. The earbuds continue to support Qi-based wireless charging as well as cable charging options. If… you should get the original AirPods Pro.
You usually only use your earbuds at home or at work.
Apple’s ANC in the original AirPods Pro is already quite good, and it is usually more than enough to deal with all but the most noisy settings. As a result, consumers who typically use their earphones in environments with modest background noise, such as at home or the workplace, can likely forgo all of the improved ANC functions of the second-generation buds.
One is satisfied with “good enough” sound quality.
Not everyone listens to music through their headphones. For many of us, the original AirPods Pro were a must-have for their customizable fit, with the enhanced audio serving as a sort of bonus. If you fall into this category, the sonic advancements of the AirPods Pro 2 may be lost on you. The originals are already more than adequate for things like Zoom calls, basic video consumption, and more, much more. Don’t feel pressured to upgrade to the latest and greatest if the new features don’t genuinely enhance your use cases.
You want to save money.
The AirPods Pro 2 will be available for $250 at launch. Meanwhile, the original AirPods Pro have dropped to around $180 on most days, and sometimes even lower. This can be a significant discount for anyone who isn’t interested in the new features and tech specs featured in the AirPods Pro 2.
